Solving Common Laundry Problems: Tips & Solutions
1. Colour Bleeding
- Problem: Colours from one garment bleed onto others, staining them.
- Solution: Separate dark and light colours before washing. Use cold water and a colour catcher sheet to prevent bleeding. For existing stains, re-wash the stained garments separately with a colour-safe bleach.
2. Wrinkling
- Problem: Clothes come out of the dryer wrinkled and crumpled.
- Solution: Remove clothes from the dryer as soon as the cycle ends to prevent wrinkles. Shake out the items and fold them immediately. For wrinkled clothes, use a handheld steamer or iron on a low heat setting.
3. Pilling
- Problem: Small balls of fabric (pills) form on clothing.
- Solution: Use a fabric shaver or a sweater stone to remove pilling. Wash clothes inside out and avoid overloading the washer or dryer to reduce pilling. Use a gentle cycle for delicate fabrics.
4. Shrinking
- Problem: Clothes shrink after washing or drying.
- Solution: Check care labels and follow instructions carefully. Wash and dry clothes at lower temperatures, and air dry delicate items. Stretch shrunken clothes gently while still damp to restore their shape.
5. Foul Odours
- Problem: Clothes develop a musty smell, even after washing.
- Solution: Ensure your washing machine is clean and free of mildew. Use vinegar or baking soda as a natural deodoriser in the wash cycle. Let clothes air dry thoroughly or add a fabric softener to the final rinse.
6. Lint Buildup
- Problem: Lint accumulates on clothes or in the dryer.
- Solution: Clean the lint trap after each dryer cycle. Use a lint roller or damp cloth to remove lint from clothing. Separate lint-producing items like towels and fleece from other clothes when washing.
7. Detergent Residue
- Problem: White residue or streaks on clothes from detergent.
- Solution: Use less detergent or switch to a liquid or high-efficiency detergent. Rinse clothes twice if needed. Avoid overloading the washing machine to ensure proper rinsing.
8. Colour Fading
- Problem: Bright colours fade after washing.
- Solution: Turn clothes inside out before washing. Use cold water and a detergent designed for colours. Avoid drying clothes in direct sunlight to prevent fading.
9. Holes in Clothes
- Problem: Clothes develop holes after washing.
- Solution: Check the inside of the washer and dryer for sharp edges that could cause damage. Avoid overloading the machines, and use mesh laundry bags for delicate items. Inspect clothes before washing and mend any small holes.
