Rust Ruin: Iron Out Those Stains

Rust stains can seem impossible to remove, but with a little effort and the right technique, you can restore your clothes back to normal. Follow these steps to effectively tackle rust stains:

  1. Sprinkle Salt: Start by sprinkling a generous amount of salt directly onto the rust stain. The salt acts as a gentle abrasive to help lift the stain.

  2. Lemon Juice Magic: Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto the salt-covered stain. The acidity of the lemon juice breaks down the rust, making it easier to remove. Ensure the stain is fully saturated with juice.

  3. Let It Sunbathe: Place the fabric in direct sunlight for about an hour. The combination of lemon juice, salt, and sunlight accelerates the stain removal process. The sunlight also enhances the bleaching power of lemon juice.

  4. Rinse and Check: After the fabric has been in the sun, rinse it thoroughly with cold water to remove the lemon juice and salt. Check to see if the stain has lightened or disappeared.

  5. Hydrogen Peroxide Boost (Optional): For tougher stains, apply a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to the affected area. Let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

  6. Launder: Once the stain is gone or significantly reduced, launder the fabric as usual in cold water. Avoid using hot water until you’re sure the rust stain is completely removed, as heat can set the stain.

  7. Check Before Drying: Always check to ensure the rust stain is completely gone before drying. If any traces of rust remain, repeat the process before drying the garment.

By using simple, natural ingredients like lemon juice and salt, you can effectively “iron out” those stubborn rust stains and bring your fabrics back to life!
